Recognizing that our work could not end with a report and that much more needs to be done to prevent and end violence against children…

In February 2008, the General Assembly (one of the main and central bodies of the UN) officially asked the Secretary General (the head of the UN) to appoint a ‘Special Representative on Violence against Children’.

In May of 2019, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced that Najat Maalla M'jid would be his new Special Representative on Violence against Children – also known as the SRSG on VAC.

The SRSG on VAC is a global independent advocate for the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children.

She works to promote the implementation of the UN Study’s recommendations.

She works closely with other UN bodies, governments, non-governmental organizations and children and young people.
